The Coach Gary Howard Legacy Endowed Fund has been created to honor former UCO Football Head Coach Gary Howard and his legacy to the Broncho Football Program. Over the years, Coach Howard has mentored thousands of former players on and off the field. What Coach Howard embodies is a true testament to what it means to be a Broncho. This fund will support all aspects of the football program and will ensure that Coach Howard's legacy will forever stay with the Broncho Football program.
Thanks to an anonymous donor, all gifts made in honor of Coach Howard will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000!
Coach Gary Howard spent 35 years at the Central State, serving as the defensive coordinator from 1968-1976 before taking over as head coach in 1977 and filling that role until 2002. The Bronchos during that time enjoyed remarkable success during his 26-year span, with Howard winning more games than any state college football coach and finishing with a 162-105-6 record.
He led UCO to 13 seasons with at least seven wins and coached 58 All-Americans during his career. Howard coached nine playoff teams, leading the Bronchos to the NAIA post-season tournament in 1979, 1982, and 1985 and to NCAA Division II playoffs in 1996, 1998, and 1999. He was named NAIA Coach of the Year in 1982 after guiding Central State University to its second National Championship.
